In March 2019, I founded Project Plume, an independent literary initiative devoted to championing underrepresented women writers in translation.
It has become well-established that women’s voices are less represented in international literature than their male counterparts, with books written by women making up merely 30% of all English book translations. In conjunction with other global efforts to address this gender gap in translated literature, Project Plume aims to amplify particularly the voices of women who write in less-represented languages in English translation.
Our long-term mission is to foster opportunities for cross-cultural exchange between women writers, translators, and readers worldwide through independent publishing activities and community outreach.
Our first undertaking is to publish a bi-annual print series. Each issue offers a diverse showcase of literature by women from a single base language or region and features artwork on a common theme.
The pilot anthology, ISSUE ZERO, will feature 20 stories, essays and poems by contemporary women writers translated from Czech to English, alongside artwork on the theme of UTOPIA, to launch in March 2020.
We are accepting both original Czech texts and English translations of Czech texts including poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction bywomen authors until midnight on 31st August 2019.
